Dye water blue 水色に染める

 Indigo dyeing is famous. and this plant "Kusagi" is the second plant that can be dyed blue in nature. Color is jade rather than blue.

クサギの実で水色に染めてみました。種とガクをわける作業が大変で、平安時代の人もやってたんだと思うとわくわくしましたが、一人ぼっちで３時間はさすがにため息のでる作業でした。100ｇのウールに対して130ｇの実がありました。
Gathering the seeds wasn't easy... 

Spent 3 hours alone in the small corner of the backyard. There were 130g of seeds for 100g of wool.

This dye does not mordanting, but seeds should be fresh. 

Bring to a boil with seeds and water, Add wool and simmer for 15 minutes, Cool, Rinse, and Dry in the shade.  I read that the color gets darker with each repetition.  This color is only dyed once. 

I think if there were three times as many seeds, the color would have been darker.

媒染が必要ないというので、そのまま種を入れて沸騰したら毛糸を入れて15分一緒に煮ました。冷まして軽くゆすぎ、脱水、陰干し。何度か繰り返すことで濃くなるそうですので、もうちょっと忍耐力があったら濃くなるかもしれませんが、それより３倍くらいの実を潰してぐつぐつやった方が濃くなるのではと思います。

Old book of 794 ~1191s have records of dyeing with this seeds, but the details are unknown. 

I read that the sepals of the flower can also be dyed. I tried it, but wool didn't absorb the color. There was certainly reddish- purple broth. so mordant may be necessary. 

じつはガクの方も赤紫色に染まる、と２つの本に記載されていたのでやってみました。結果まったく色を吸わなかったのですが、煮汁は確かに赤紫色をしたので媒染液を使った方がいいのかなと思いました。昔の人も詳しく書いてくれてたらね。

It's easier to find this tree's flower sepals and seeds are brightly colored in the fall and into countryside. still, the area where the tree grows is usually someone else's property and has snakes or wasps. When the season comes you might can buy it online shop. 

クサギは調べると臭いという情報が出てきますが、書いた人は嗅いだことがないのだと思います。臭木と書いても下品な匂いはしません。葉っぱは野生のフキみたいなニオイで、ちぎると何か匂いますが、なんだかわかりません。煮ている時は漢方薬のにおいがしました。派手な色をしているので秋になると見つけやすいですが、誰かの私有地であること以外にも蛇だのオオスズメバチだのいるような場所で育っていることが多いので、散歩好きな田舎の年配の方に頼むと要領よくとってきてくれると思います。でも最近は時期になるとオンラインでも売っているみたいですね。実が潰れるとすぐ青い汁がでます、新鮮な方がよいと読みましたが、乾燥してしまった実も湯の中で膨らんで青くなりましたよ

Pixie hat 小人の帽子

 I finished a hat.

The yarn I used was a gift from my friend. She and I have been in touch for 8 years now, but due to circumstances in her country, we can no longer email each other.

She sent me enough yarn to knit a sweater. However I fancy knitting various small knits, cause I might be able to feel her everywhere by using them. and I just hope she is safe and never in danger.

This hat name is " Fuzzy pixie hood" Pattern by Fabel knitwear. It is covers ears without crush the bangs, and pretty convenient. 

　お友達がくれた毛糸で帽子を編みました。セーターを編めるくらいの量を送ってくれたのですが、小さい物をいくつか編んで使うことにしました。彼女とは８年もやり取りしていたのですが、お国の事情でとうとう連絡が取れなくなってしまいました。いつもいる人の安否が急にわからなくなるのは不安で仕方がないです。もらった毛糸から彼女を感じるのがまた悲しいのですが、無事を祈りながら大事に使おうと思います。パターン名は 「Fuzzy pixie hood」 Fabel knitwear　前髪がぺちゃんこにならず耳が隠れるので暖かくて便利です。

Triangle Vest for men 三角形のメンズベスト

 Hello my dear friend, I hope you are doing well. The fire wood stove season has arrived here. and I have finished knitting a vest for hubby. I liked the pattern with a lot of triangles in. 

In order to omit the sewing process of the front and the back, I used a circular needle.

Hubby was very pleased. I sewed that jacket too :)

The pattern is from the book of 1930s "Family knitting".  I didn't choose the sharpness of the waist to make modern.  

When using a circular needle like me, chose a number that is divisible by 4 and 6. In my case, cast on 252 sts for Chest 38 ins. Used UK 9,11 needles and needed just 200g of socks yarn. 

秋めいてきましたがお元気でいらっしゃいますか？こちらは薪ストーブに朝晩と火が入る季節になりました。それで主人のベストを１枚、さっそく編みあげたところです。よく見ると三角形がたくさん入って、シンプルながら素敵なパターンです。英文ですが拡大したので興味のある方はぜひどうぞ。

写真でもわかるように脇の縫い合わせを省略して輪針で編みました。それと３０年代の編み図なので、現代風にするためにウェストをまっすぐな形にして編みました。これ、サイズを小さくして男の子用にしても可愛いんじゃないかなと思います。私のように輪にする場合は縫い代を４目単純に引きたいところですが、模様がぴったり合うように４と６で割り切れる目数にして下さい。針は日本棒針で５と３号を使い、毛糸は靴下用のをぴったり２００ｇ使いました。サイズはＬくらい、胸回り約97cmになります。主人が着たところ写真に撮りましたがジャケットもそういえばで私の手作りです。思ったより喜んでいましたよ。よかったよかった

Dog's blanket and some pairs of socks

 Did you enjoy your vacation ? (We didn't have vacation because hubby's work was too much busy.) It was hot summer, I didn't want to touch wool in the deadly heat. Even so I'm finishing something small knitting in the last few months. Knitting calms me down always, you too ?

夏休みは楽しかったですか？うちは夫の仕事が忙しく盆休み無しでした。今年も暑かったですね。さすがに猛暑でウールを触るのは避けましたが、この数カ月でいくつか小物を編みました。やっぱり編みもをする時間は、心が落ち着きます。

She turned seven

Think of knitting for dog's blanket use scrap yarn. 

あまり糸で犬のブランケットを夏の間に編みました。なかなか良い色合いになりましたよ。

And it was finished before autumn.

Each year I'm knitting 10 pairs of socks, those are for 5 people. and doing half of 5 now. Socks are really consumables. However hand knitting is warm. 

 When it cools down, a lovely sweater project is waiting for me :) Are you planning a big project ?

涼しくなったらセーターを編もうと計画中です。台風は大丈夫でしたか？

Fishing in the river

 Dear friend, How about you ?  Really hot days continue. This was 36 degrees (96.8F) here, it's good to be in a cool room. Though, we went fishing on the weekends.

Under a big tree, the temperature drops by 20 degrees (68F). I don't fish, so I read a book leisurely in a cool place. 

I brought my knitting, but did not. The book was interesting.  

Hubby caught some baby fish this day.

However, don't you think this question is the same.

We will go fishing again. I wish hubby catches supper.

Harvest

 I hope you enjoy the summer days. Suddenly became hot here in Japan, The heat get tired. 

 Introduce some fruits within the last month. "Loquat" ( we say Biwa) is not a Japanese original fruit. It came from China in ancient times. This fruit can be lined up in a supermarket for a short period of time. You may have a chance to eat, if you were here. Pest and eat, very juicy and good taste. It takes a long time for a tree to bear fruit. We say that the planter cannot eat while he is alive. it takes so long to grow a tree. Dried wood swords are hard enough to bend iron. 

Our tree is a tree planted by an old parson. This year was delicious. 

Biwa, Loquat

and  "Yamamomo" it similar to other berry but different in taste. Our tree made fruit for first time this year. probably the tree has grown large and it has become easier to accept pollen. Unfortunately, this fruit does not line up in a supermarket ( because it is easily damaged ) However, it's planted a lot in parks and street trees, if you have a chance, you will be able to taste it. Wait until it turns red like blood. Otherwise, more sour than lemon. Raw eat or take seeds and make jam, it tastes unique. The recommendation is to pickle with brandy and the same amount of rock candy ( Crystal sugar ) Mature for about a year,  and it's made into a sauce such as chicken or shrimp, it is sweet and very delicious.  

ひどい暑さですね。最近の収穫の写真です。だいぶ昔の人が植えたうちの琵琶、今年はなぜか美味しかったです。ヤマモモは初めて実をつけました。見たことがない人も多いようです。スーパーに並ばないのですが、公園や街路樹で見かけますね。そのまま食べられるのですが、血のように赤くなるまで待たないと、えらく酸っぱいです。苦労して絞ってジャムにすると、かき氷につけるシロップみたいな味になります。私の一番のお勧めはヤマモモ酒にしてステーキソースにすることです。ブランデーと氷砂糖で数年は寝かせます。塩コショウをしたチキン、または殻付きのエビなど、このお酒を入れ蒸し焼きにすると、めちゃくちゃ美味しいですよ。

Sleeveless Waistcoat

I have been knitting sleeveless sweater from the pattern of 1940s. 

The old picture of the model is wearing cute and lovely fit. but I was making mistake in the front line, so it not good worked.

What do you do when you finally sew and find a mistake ? 

I left it as it is.. ! I may try again, in a different color.

And the size seems a little large for me. 

The pattern from a book of " Vintage knitting 18 patterns from the 1940s" by Liza Hollinghurst . Check inside before buying a book. 

I will knit cardigan from that book again. I wish I can knit it before the winter. 

1940年代のパターンでベストを編みました。よく見るとわかるんですが、前身ごろのラインが間違っています。しかも全て終わって縫い合わせて間違えを見つけたという、、がっくり。でも直さずにそのまま着ることにしました。写真を撮ってみるとちょっと大きいのにも気が付きました。もう一度違う色でサイズを直して、正しく編みなおすのもイイかもしれません。パターンはVintage knitting というLiza Hollinghurst さんの本の中から編みました。お買い求めの場合は中をパラパラと見てからの方がいいと思います。次はカーディガンも編んでみようと思っています。冬が来る前に編み終わったらいいかなという感じですが。

Dye with Sakura wood 桜木で染める

 I tried dyeing the yarn with Sakura, cherry tree. 

This little experiment is fun !! "Sakura, cherry blossoms are everywhere in Japan, either wild or in park and street trees. There are many types of cherry blossoms, among them, I just got the wood of wild cherry blossoms ( According to the information from a vintage book I got, Sakura can be dyed on branch and leaves as well. )

桜の木でウールを染めてみました。桜にも種類がありますが、私は山桜を使いました。

You need the same amount of Sakura as the yarn you want to dye. 

I used the central parts in the wood. Can you see that the colors are different ? A little reddish.

写真でおわかりのように芯が少し赤っぽいですね。今回はそこを細かく切って使いました。だいたい染める毛糸と同じ量を用意します。最初に媒染液と染める前の毛糸を火にかけて15分煮ます。（今回使った媒染液はあらかじめ小瓶に10円玉とお酢、水を入れ数カ月寝かせておいた手作り銅液を使いました。）煮た後は冷ます。

First, the 100g of yarn was boiled in a mordant. ( My mordanting was made by adding water to a solution of copper coins, vinegar and water soaked for few months.) The yarn will cool naturally, during which time, boil the woods. There was 280g of finely chopped wood.

Boiled for 30 minutes. The color of black tea came out. After removing the wood and cooling it a little, I added yarn and boiled it at high temperature for 20 minutes. 

媒染液を冷ましている間に別の鍋に芯材を煮て染色液を作りますが、メモによると退屈して30分しか煮なかったようです。手が入れられるくらい冷めたら木材を取り出し、毛糸を入れて再び煮ます。15-20分すると茶色の液体がどんどん毛糸に吸収されていきます。面白いですね。冷ましたあとは軽くゆすぎ、脱水、陰干し。

Wool seems to have inhales the color. Let it cool, then rinse a little and let it dry. 

ほんのり桜っぽい赤茶ピンクになりました。このあと靴下にしてしまいましたが、今のところ色は保っています。

The yarn was dyed well. Pink beige or reddish light brown. The color of the cherry blossoms.

This time, the wood of Cherry blossoms was mixed in the firewood sold by gardener. We don't put it in the furnace and kept them unused. This wood is bring the scent of very delicious even if you smoke bacon. 

 今回は薪屋さんがどっさり配達してきた薪の中に山桜が混じっていたので、冬の間それを使わずにとっておきました。毛糸もよく染まりましたが、布なんかもいいみたいですね。葉っぱを使われた方は茶色っぽくなったみたいです。私の古い本によると、桜なら心材でも枝でも葉っぱでも同様に赤茶になるとありますが、生木を使うよりは１～２年この薪のように乾燥させた方がいいのではと思います。この木材でベーコンを燻製にするのも香りのたまらない一品が出来上がりますよ。

Mayfield mitts

 I have finished knitting cute bird mitts. I couldn't do kit well. but I like it so much. I used my hand dyed yarn with acorn. The colors are light beige and black.

可愛い小鳥のミトンが編み終わりました。不格好なんですが出来上がると嬉しいですね。毛糸はどんぐりで染めたのを使いました。なので色は薄いベージュと黒です。パターンはネットで手に入れました。ほとんど図を見て編むので英語が苦手でも大丈夫だと思いますよ

The other day, I found the footprints of a wild rabbit in the garden. The wild rabbits here do not have nests. They are always on the move. So it's pleasure to meet.

　庭に野ウサギの足跡を見つけました。ここの野ウサギは決まった巣を持たずに常に動き回っています。めったに会えないので、いるとわかって嬉しい。庭の何か食べられちゃうかなとドキドキするけど今のところ何も害はないですね。食べ物は足りているのかな

　ここのところ時間が少しでもあると薪を拾ったり割ったりしていて、あんまりiPadをやらなくなりました。なのでしばらくインスタグラムもお休みすると思います。薪は８トンあっても足りませんでした。配達はあるのですが量が多いと高くつきますから。でも薪のおかげで雪が降っても室内は夏のように暖かいです。そこでゆったり編み物をするのは何とも心地いいので、つい日中はせっせと薪を用意したくなります。逆によく動くので健康にもいいのかもしれません。

We break firewood when we have a little time. Even 8 tons of firewood was not enough. It was our first winter with a wood stove, so we didn't know how many firewood we needed. Fortunately delivery of wood comes here just like food delivery, which is a convenient world. I am happy to knitting in a warm room at night.  

Anyway, we will plant more trees this spring than we had planned.

There aren't many people where I live ,lots of nature. I'm more careful about "bird flu. Our chickens haven't free walk outside for the last few months...

次はカーディガンでも編もうと思っています。まだまだコロナも怖いのでどうぞ気をゆるめずに気を付けてください。私はというと、ここは人間があまりいない田舎で、配達もあるので、むしろ鳥インフルエンザの方を日々気を付けています。うちのチキンはここ数カ月外を歩けません。仕方ないですね
